Donor Stories

EMBA Class 11

The class of EMBA-11 (2008-2010), whose graduation year coincided with the establishment of the College's Academic Heritage & Dream Realization International Exchange Scholarship to help disadvantaged students or those who have suffered sudden changes, decided to award an annual scholarship of $20,000 each to 16 students. The class representative, Mr. Tsu-kang Lei (雷祖綱), who is also a distinguished alumnus of National Sun Yat-sen University, strongly agreed with this idea and rallied his classmates to support the scholarship, and they have since donated $320,000 each year in the hope that the students can pursue their studies without worries.

It is now the 12th year since then, and the donation amount has reached 3.84 million dollars, and more than 100 students have been helped. Through practical support and encouragement from the alumni, many students who were suffering from hardship at that time have felt the strength and care of their seniors. They have also promised to pass on this love by giving back to the students in the future.

Prof. Ting-Peng (TP) Liang, Master of Business Management, Class 1980

He was born in Magong City, Penghu County, hence the name "Ting-Peng". He grew up in the military village of Renmei in Kaohsiung. He went to Renmei Elementary School, Wenshan Elementary School, Fongshan Junior High School and then Kaohsiung Senior High School, where he grew up as a simple boy who loved to read and play sports. In 1971, he studied in the Department of Chemical Engineering at National Cheng Kung University while taking classes in business management. Aside from school work, he participated in the New Poetry Club and Debate Club, and he also won the Hong Chien-Chuan Children's Literature Award. He was a young man who was into literature and lived a colorful life during his college years. After finishing college in 1975, he has worked for companies such as Chi Mei Corporation, Huikwang Chemical Company, Taiwan Synthetic Rubber Company, and Caofu Chemical Corporation as a pragmatic office worker.

In 1980, when the National Sun Yat-sen University was founded, he was admitted to the graduate program in the Department of Business Management as the top student and was the first batch of alumni to graduate from the Department. During the time at school, he had positive interactions with the faculty members under the leadership of the first president, Mr. Li Huan, and he was a motivated student. In 1981, he was awarded a scholarship from the University to study Behavioral and Decision Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania, and he received his master's and doctoral degrees in 1984 and 1986, respectively. During this time, he actively participated in various cultural exchange activities as a patriotic young man who loved to share Chinese culture. After receiving his doctoral degree, he was offered a position as an assistant professor in the Department of Accounting at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and in 1990, he moved to Purdue University as a tenured associate professor in the Department of Business Administration. He had had nearly a decade of experience in studying and teaching at internationally renowned schools and was an outstanding scholar who had accumulated tremendous research capabilities and a wide range of connections internationally. In 1991, he decided to return to Taiwan with his family and teach at his alma mater, National Sun Yat-sen University, to contribute his knowledge, experience and resources to the country.

Dr. Liang was a highly respected academic in the field of information management at home and abroad. He had not only been awarded the Distinguished Research Award by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) for three consecutive years and the Distinguished Research Fellowship by MOST for two consecutive years, but he also received the Ministry of Education National Chair Professorship in 2008. In 2014, he was awarded the LEO Award for Lifetime Achievement by the Association for Information Systems (AIS), and he was appointed as the President of the AIS in 2018, which made him the first person in the Chinese world to receive this honor. Professor Liang's enthusiasm for sharing and bringing up his juniors was admirable. Every year, he invited outstanding scholars in the field of information management from abroad to Taiwan for exchange events, giving domestic scholars the opportunity to see the world at a higher level. He also enjoyed cross-disciplinary exchanges and had always been a pioneer in the global field of information management, offering many research and learning opportunities for faculty and students, which made him a role model in the field of management.

Dr. Liang was not only a visionary and a practitioner. He was not only passionate about academics, but he was also devoted to singing. In addition, he loved playing tennis. During games, he was a good player with a good tempo of attack and defense, just like he was in his academic research. He was always able to foresee and accurately grasp the trends of research. Sadly, Professor Liang passed away on May 20, 2021. The falling of an academic star is a great loss to the field of information management and management academia. Mrs Chen-Li Wang donated NT$2 million on behalf of her late husband to establish the Lifetime National Chair Professor Ting-Peng Liang Memorial Award, in the hope of nurturing more management talents for Taiwan. "Always believe in the future, always believe in your dreams." was the motto of Professor Liang's, and it also serves as a guideline for students on their journey of study. "The sages, whose times have been far away from us, were models of great virtue from the past." The influence of Professor Liang had on many people during his lifetime will continue to live on.

Thank You Messages from Students

Yu-Hao Fang, MBA in Finance, Class of 2022

Since I entered NSYSU’s master’s program the year before last, I have been very impressed with the importance the College of Management places on its students, not only in terms of the abundant learning resources, but also in terms of the care and assistance given to them. Thanks to contributions of many kind-hearted alumni, the College of Management has set up a number of scholarships, such as the College of Management Academic Heritage Grant, the Yuyu Chin Lu Education Foundation Scholarship, etc. These resources mean a lot to students, both in terms of financial assistance so that we do not delay our studies, and also in terms of encouragement and affirmation of students’ minds. We will always remember this kindness and turn it into a motivation to continue to improve and grow. In my case, in addition to receiving the two scholarships mentioned above, I have also taken advantage of the many resources available to me to further my professional development. For example, during my master’s degree, I participated in clubs for R Language and workplace English conversation, among others. These clubs are all subsidized by the College of Management under the Online Resource Learning Club Grant and are established to allow students to refine their academic knowledge beyond the required elective courses. They also allow students to develop additional expertise in their own interests in their spare time.

In addition, since I rarely have an environment where I can communicate in full English, I took advantage of these scholarships to participate in online business English tutoring. Through regular weekly business English classes, I was able to sharpen my listening and speaking skills and develop a more authentic accent. Through the English Learning Corner events organized by the College of Management, I also had the opportunity to interact with international students and further improve my English communication skills. These resources have helped me to become more proficient and confident in English during many internship interviews, and they have also made me more competitive in the finance industry.

In addition to providing abundant learning resources, the College of Management has also made great efforts to counsel students on their career development. The Office of Career Development has arranged systems and resources of resume workshops and career counseling consultants for students, which are exclusively available to students of the College of Management and are completely free. The comprehensive online system makes it very convenient to make appointments with consultants. I have used the resume workshops and career counseling resources as a student, and they have greatly helped me in my career development.

To sum up, I am very grateful to the College of Management of National Sun Yat-sen University for its guidance and assistance. These scholarships have enabled me to focus on professional skills, strengthen my foreign language skills and enrich my career possibilities during my two years as a student. In the future, I will be able to apply what I have learned to the workplace and become a financial professional who can create unique value for companies. The opportunities I have had allow me to give back to the community through my own efforts, bringing hope and possibility to others, so that this kindness can be positively circulated and our society can be filled with positive energy.

I-Hsun Li, Department of Finance, Class of 2022

I am I-Hsun Lee, a student of the Department of Finance, Class of 2022. I am honored to have received the 2018 Sun Yat-sen Management Education Foundation Scholarship with Distinction, so I would like to share what the scholarship has done for me for future students of the College of Management to refer to. I come from a humble family background, so as a high school student, I always applied for scholarships to supplement my family’s income with my school grades. During the summer after my senior year of high school, I worked at a screw factory in the morning and as a waiter in the restaurant industry in the evening because I wanted to earn as much money as I could for my living expenses before I went to college. After I started college, I was lucky enough to talk to the department office assistant, Ya-Huang, about my family’s situation. Thanks to her help, I was able to receive a scholarship because of my excellent academic test scores.

The scholarship was a blessing to me as I had just entered college and was not yet familiar with the new environment. At that time, I was living on the savings I had earned over the summer because I had not yet found a part-time job in college. In addition, I was still trying to figure out how to plan my time and find a balance between studying and club activities. Therefore, receiving this scholarship not only directly solved my financial difficulties, but also saved me a lot of time, which allowed me to devote myself more to my studies and explore my interests more in a practical way through my club activities.

Therefore, the Sun Yat-sen Management Education Foundation Scholarship with Distinction helped me get through this chaotic transition period and laid a very good foundation for my learning and growth over the next four years.

Not only was I brave enough to try my hand at diversified courses, but I also served as the head of the department’s orientation camp and the president of the Department of Finance’s Student Association. In addition, as a junior under the guidance of Ms. Chia-Fen Tsai, I successfully completed the Ministry of Science and Technology’s project for college students. This project focused on identifying future ESG trends and explored the relationship between corporate carbon policies and the characteristics of corporate managers. I also participated in the joint admissions project of the College of Management in my junior year and became a representative of the Department of Finance, giving back to NSYSU’s College of Management for its help. Looking back on these four years, I believe the whole college process was difficult but very practical. Thanks to the scholarship, I have not been overwhelmed by the pressures of life, but have been able to meet every challenge of my college life with my head held high.

Lastly, I would like to say to the future students who will be studying at the College of Management: even if you don't have many resources, don't give up so easily! The only thing we have to do is to make the most of our four years in college, study hard in class, work hard outside of class to improve our programming skills and English skills, and participate in business competitions to gain experience in teamwork. The College of Management has a wealth of resources that will help you and be your strongest support!

Yi-Chen Lin, Department of International Business MBA (IBMBA), Class of 2021

In 2022, I was privileged to participate in the ACT Program Dual Degree offered by the College of Management at National Sun Yat-sen University. I was fortunate to be awarded the NSYSU-CM Alumni Study-Abroad Scholarship. This was a dream come true, as I have been eager to study abroad since high school. Still, financial constraints have always been a significant obstacle.
"Success is not final; failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts." This quote by Winston Churchill has encouraged me to take every step forward with courage and determination. With this mindset, I entered the College of Management at NSYSU. I applied for the ACT Program, a valuable opportunity for international exchange.
The opportunity for overseas study is precious, but behind this beautiful moment, I am well aware of the many challenges I must overcome, particularly the financial burden. When I shared my plans with my family, they expressed their support, but I could also see the worry in their eyes. My parents have been working tirelessly to support my education. I feel the weight of their expectations and the pressure to succeed.
First and foremost, financial issues pose a significant challenge. The costs of studying abroad are considerable, including tuition fees, living expenses, accommodation, airfare, and more. For my family, these expenses represent a substantial financial burden. Without the NSYSU-CM Alumni Study-Abroad Scholarship, my dream might have remained an unattainable fantasy. However, thanks to the College of Management, this scholarship has opened the door to my future.
Furthermore, this scholarship has enabled me to study alongside students from Canada, Taiwan, Austria, and various other countries during the nine-month program. This experience has not only enriched my academic knowledge. Still, it has also given me insights into different cultures and business environments worldwide. Collaborating and communicating with classmates from diverse backgrounds has broadened my horizons and taught me how to thrive in cross-cultural settings.
This international exchange experience has not only enriched my academic and cultural knowledge. Still, it has also deepened my understanding of the importance of globalized business. Working with classmates from different countries has taught me the adaptability and integration skills necessary for success in international business management. This scholarship experience has been a learning process and instrumental in shaping my career aspirations and goals.
In conclusion, the NSYSU-CM Alumni Study-Abroad Scholarship has been a tremendously valuable experience for me. It has provided me with the opportunity to pursue my dream of studying abroad, alleviated the financial burden for me and my family, and equipped me with invaluable experiences and knowledge from international exchange. This scholarship has become a guiding star on my educational journey, giving me the confidence to pursue my dreams. I will always be grateful to the College of Management at National Sun Yat-sen University for providing this exceptional opportunity. I am committed to giving back to society and helping other aspiring students achieve their goals.
